Kiwanis was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. The word Kiwanis is an American Indian term which means “self expression.” Kiwanis International consists of nearly 8000 clubs in more than 80 countries with a total membership around 300,000. The various clubs in Kiwanis International raise more than $70 million a year and donate more that seven million hours of service each year.
The Kiwanis Club of South Sioux Falls, known as South Sioux Kiwanis, was chartered May 27, 1954 at First Lutheran Church. The Governor was Arthur S. Myklebust of Sioux Falls. Our first Prisident was Lloyd Johnson. The club now has about 30 members. The club’s weekly meeting consists of a noon meal, committee reports, happy dollars, celebration of birthdays and anniversaries, and a guest speaker discussing topics relevant to the club and community. South Sioux Kiwanis is one of 5 independent Sioux Falls Kiwanis clubs.
Club activities are organized through a number of committees including Community Services, Young Children Priority One, Sponsored Youth, Human and Spiritual Aims, and Fund Raising. There are monthly service projects, examples are our Signature Project:Adopt a Family, Bishop Dudley Hospitality House/The Good Shepherd Children's Center, Compassion Child Care, Ephemeral Acting Academy, Family Visitation Center, Feeding SD/Back Pack Program, Food To You Mobile Food Pantry, Groundworks-Midwest Teaching Gardens, Haiti Crayon Collectipn Drive, Harmony South Dakota, Hawthorne School, HOBY, Holiday Clearing House, Horse Power Child Scholarships, Kids Against Hunger, McCrossan Boys Ranch FCA, Salvation Army Angel Tree and Red Kettle, Teddy Bear Den, The Banquet, The Banquet S.O.S. Program, Toy Lending Library, United Day Care, Youth Enrichment Services, along with financial support to Kiwanis International:The Eliminate Project.
South Sioux Kiwanis support scholarships to area students attending a college or university through the Sioux Falls Area Foundation and through the Kiwanis Minnesota Dakotas District Education Foundation.
South Sioux Kiwanis has an expanding alliance with Hawthorne Elementary to help, mentor, and support at risk students.
